Enjoying life comes naturally to young children. My two year old boy and five year old daughter joyfully suck all the life, laughter, and joy out of every experience… they both enter everyday with an expectation of enjoyment. I love the joy that the innocence of childhood brings.
But, age taints this natural instinct to enjoy life. Adult life can be full of stresses, deadlines, overwhelming situations, unexpected turns, loss, and heartache. BUT, somehow in the midst of all of life’s chaos there is also so much beauty, God-breathed situations, life-giving friendships, life, joy, peace, laughter, and love. There is much to be overwhelmed with in life, but there is also much to enjoy in life.
and it brings God pleasure when we choose to enjoy life
At the beginning of this year, I felt like the Lord spoke to my heart one specific word: “enjoy”. Honestly, this word, “enjoy” took me by surprise. I was a little taken off, because I was expecting the Lord to correct me or challenge me in a different way. In past years, the Lord had spoken different things to my heart at the beginning of the year, things that involved productive action, things like: “growth”or “spend more time with Me” … so I did not know what to do with the word “enjoy”.
Could God really be challenging me to enjoy life more?
Over the last couple months, I have been surprised to see how difficult it was for me to fully recline and enjoy life. I can so easily let the responsibilities of life and daily to-do lists strip me from simply enjoying life.
I have come to realize that “enjoying life” was an area of life that I needed a lot of help with!
I am always wanting to do life well, be organized, and get things done, but the Lord isn’t always super impressed with all of that, especially if it is preventing me from enjoying life.
Needless to say, I am on a journey, a journey many of us are on. A journey of striving less, and resting in the Lord more. Laughing more and stressing less. Trusting God more, and worrying less. Loving more, and judging less. A journey to simply enjoy life, everyday.
I love how the character of God is revealed in His interest in our enjoying life. As a Good Father, he takes delight in our enjoyment and wants to make sure that we are enjoying life to the full.
Lately, the word “enjoy” in scripture seems to pop off the page at me …
The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and ENJOY LIFE, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]. – John 10:10 AMP
…nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us RICHLY ALL THINGS TO ENJOY. – 1 Timothy 6:17 NKJV
I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, and also that every man should eat and drink and ENJOY THE GOOD of all his labor—it is the gift of God. – Eccl. 3:12-13 NKJV
Ah, so let’s enjoy life! Such a fun challenge to take from the Lord! Loosen up and live! Let’s not take ourselves or life too seriously. Jesus came that we might have and enjoy life.
Lord, help us all take big gulps of Your goodness and not be ashamed to enjoy life to the full!
Let the Lord be magnified, who delights and takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servant. Psalm 35:27
